At Sunrise Retreats, we offer a comprehensive program to support, educate, and uplift widowed women navigating life after the death of a partner. More than just a weekend retreat, our program includes an 8-week course, an online community, and the retreat itself. This multifaceted approach is designed to meet women's unique needs as they grieve, adjust to life, and begin rebuilding their lives.

Set on a thousand‑acre peninsula reaching into the clear waters of Payette Lake, Ponderosa State Park in McCall, Idaho, is one of the places where the land itself seems to exhale. Towering pines sway overhead, their warm, rich scent drifting through the air like an invitation to slow down and take a deep breath.
During the retreat, you’ll stay in one of the Kokanee Cove two‑bedroom cabins, tucked amidst the trees and along the sandy shoreline. These cozy, light‑filled spaces offer both comfort and quiet while also being just steps from your fellow Sunrise Retreat community.
The park’s blend of rugged wilderness and gentle ease makes it an ideal setting for restoration. Miles of forested trails offer space to wander, reflect, and reconnect with your own rhythm. The lake mirrors the sky in a way that naturally settles the nervous system. And the presence of ancient ponderosa pines that have weathered many storms creates a sense of grounded resilience. We think it is a magical place to gather.
Whether you’re walking beneath cathedral‑tall pines, listening to the hush of water against the shore, or sipping warm coffee on your porch as the first light filters through the trees, Ponderosa State Park offers a kind of spaciousness that gently tends to healing in ways only nature can.
If you are traveling by plane to Boise, it is about a 2 hour drive from the Boise Airport.
Starting at least four weeks before the retreat, you will meet weekly via Zoom for 1.5 hours as part of your "Widow Wellness" Discover Life Again™ education course. During this time, you'll have the opportunity to connect with the other participants while learning about various tools and resources to enhance your well-being during your grief journey.
This is a lovely way to begin our journey together; by the time we meet in person, we will have already established a safe and welcoming foundation with each other.
Upon arrival, you can expect to be warmly welcomed by our team of fellow widowed warriors. There will be time to set up your room, meet the other participants (note that our retreats are not co-ed), and relax. After settling in, take a moment to breathe in the fresh air, calm your mind, visit with others, or enjoy a relaxing one-hour massage. Soon, we will gather for icebreakers, introductions, and opening ceremonies!
We do everything possible to ensure everyone feels comfortable and relaxed.
As the smell of dinner wafts through the air, laughter signals the deepening connections among us and the start of a magical weekend. Guided activities will lead us to shared understandings, helping us to feel less alone. Fireside stories will welcome the stars as the sun begins to set.
And yes, there will be CHOCOLATE!
We’ve heard giggles, snores, and everything in between. Whether you retire to bed by eight or laugh under the stars is entirely up to you! This weekend is designed for you to replenish, rejuvenate, and re-ignite. Regardless of your choice, we will return to our rustic, charming home away from home, surrounded by our circle of new friends.
Please remember: what is shared at the retreat stays at the retreat!
We will greet the sunrise with gently guided movement and mindfulness practices. The laid-back mornings give you time to enjoy a cup of coffee, receive a massage, journal, or take a stroll before we begin our activities. A family-style breakfast will fuel our bodies for the adventures of the day. You’ll immerse yourself in nature, engage in creative expression, learn wellness tools, and have plenty of time to relax while the land, trees, birds, and sky aid in your healing.
Dinner will bring us back to the family table, followed by more guided activities, fireside magic, and, of course, chocolate!
On Sunday, we will again greet the sunrise with guided mindful movement designed to calm, restore, and recenter. Grab your tea or coffee as we continue our program, followed by one final brunch meal together.
Finally, during the closing ceremonies—well, we’ll leave some elements to your imagination. You can expect to leave the retreat by midday.
As you drive away, many have shared a feeling of hope, connection, and renewed energy.
After the retreat, we will continue meeting via Zoom for four more weeks to help you integrate everything you experienced during the retreat into your daily life at home. Your circle of support continues.
Our program offers experiential education opportunities aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of widowed women navigating life after the death of their partner. Grief has no time limit. We welcome anyone experiencing the death of a partner, regardless of the length of time since they died or the time you were together.
Here, you will find connections, deep understanding, resources, education, inspiration, and, most importantly, hope.
Sunrise Retreats was founded in 2017 by Marni Henderson, who envisioned an experience to fulfill her deep desire to connect, grieve, heal, and grow alongside other widows. Despite having more than 23 years of experience as a health and wellness educator, she felt unprepared to navigate her own well-being as a widow. You can read more about the beginnings of Sunrise Retreats on our website.
The death of a partner is a natural part of the human experience, and the challenge of living without the person with whom we hoped to share our future is profoundly devastating. We believe that spending time in nature, engaging in creative expression, participating in movement and bodywork, embracing adventure, enjoying good food, using practical tools, and practicing self-inquiry can offer powerful moments of healing.
Grief is a deeply intimate and sacred journey that affects the whole being—body, mind, and spirit. Our retreats provide a safe space for connection, support, and inspiration. The curriculum is carefully designed to offer numerous opportunities for nurturing, healing, and growth as participants navigate life's complexities. Together, we honor our shared humanity, acknowledging the past with tenderness, remaining aware of the present, and striving to create a hopeful future.
*While our program is professionally designed and facilitated by credentialed health professionals, the retreats are non-therapeutic.

Set on a thousand‑acre peninsula that reaches into the clear, shimmering waters of Payette Lake, Ponderosa State Park in McCall, Idaho, is one of those places where the land seems to take a long, slow breath. The tall pines sway overhead, carrying that warm, resin‑rich scent that instantly tells your body to relax.
For the retreat, you’ll stay in one of the Kokanee Cove two‑bedroom cabins tucked right along the sandy shoreline with the forest backdrop. They’re tastefully cozy, and close enough to the water that you can hear the lake before you see it.
McCall sits in Idaho’s West Central Mountains, about a two‑hour drive north of Boise. If you’re coming from the south, the road follows the Payette River through canyons, whitewater, and those big mountain curves that help shift from the city hustle. If you’re driving down from the north, you’ll pass through quiet stretches of forest, farmland, and rivers before the lake suddenly appears in downtown McCall.
The park itself is a blend of rugged wilderness, home to Huckleberries, hawks, wild meadows, and dense undergrowth, surrounded by the calming waters of Payette Lake. Miles of trails wind through the trees, giving you space to wander at your own pace in a way that naturally calms the nervous system. And the old ponderosa pines, scarred, weathered, and standing majestically tall, carry a kind of steady presence to find healing, sturdy enough to hold grief, and nurturing to the soul.
Whether you’re walking amongst the trees, listening to the hush of water against the shore, or sipping warm coffee on your porch as the first light filters through the branches, this place offers a spaciousness that tends to you in ways only nature can. We look forward to welcoming you.
Grief has no time limit. We welcome anyone experiencing the death of a partner regardless of the length of time since they died or the time you were together.
At this time, we focus on women navigating life after the death of a partner. In the future, we look forward to expanding our retreats to men as well as solo parents and their children.
At this time, we ask that you find transportation to Ponderosa State Park. It is a 2-hour drive from Boise. If you are interested in carpooling with another attendee, we are happy to connect you with them! If you are traveling by plane, you will want to arrive at the Boise Airport and drive to McCall. Once you arrive at our location, the retreat is all-inclusive.
We do offer scholarships and will never turn anyone away for financial reasons! Don't hesitate to get in touch with us to discuss payment options and scholarship opportunities, or check out our financial support page. Again, once you arrive at the retreat, it is all-inclusive.
For the retreat, you’ll stay in one of the 6 Kokanee Cove two‑bedroom cabins tucked right along the sandy shoreline with the forest backdrop. These cabins are tastefully cozy and thoughtfully appointed, featuring two queen bedrooms, a full kitchen, and one bathroom. All linens are provided. You will share a cabin with someone else, have your own bedroom with a queen bed, and share a bathroom.
Our menu can be adjusted for food sensitivities; please let us know any restrictions when you register. Although we offer many opportunities to be active throughout the weekend, we will absolutely make accommodations to support your highest well-being if you have any limitations. This retreat is a holistic experience that encompasses the mind, heart, body, and spirit. We will do what is needed to enhance your comfort!
While we are a nonprofit, we honor the expertise, time, and resources that go into delivering high-quality programming. Participant fees help cover basic program costs, but donations allow us to bridge the gap—ensuring equitable access while maintaining professional standards. Our goal is to keep services fairly priced, never profit-driven, and always rooted in dignity.
