Sunrise Retreats started in early 2017 with a very simple yet tragically passionate dream. Following the death of her husband in 2013, our Sunrise founder, Marni Henderson, wanted to create a space of healing nourishment and hope-filled connections for other widows that was the next step beyond counseling and grief support groups.
Fueled by her professional background in health and wellness education, she created an experience where women could connect with others who shared a similar pain point, honored deep grief and were encouraged to discover what it meant to create new life today.
Retreat participants find themselves surrounded by nature (a natural healer), replenished with tender self-care, playing with creativity, learning new tools, and inspired to ignite a flame of hope for today…..and maybe even a flicker towards a future.
Using the same techniques from years of professionally educating and coaching others in their personal health journeys, Marni applied those to the path of grief, life after loss, re-imagining futures, and recovering personal health and wellness.
How do we begin to pick up the pieces and discover life again?
This was an opportunity to enhance and support the well-being of those navigating life after the death of our beloved.
After two years of offering retreats under River Discovery, another local Idaho nonprofit, Marni was encouraged to create Sunrise Retreats as its own entity.
Today, we have many of the past retreat participants volunteering to continue the circle of outreach. Proud to work with other community partners in Idaho and beyond, we continue to be a springboard of hope!
If you find yourself on the path beyond heartache from the death of your partner, this retreat is for you, and please join us.
If you love someone on this journey, share this with them.
It takes many hands to make light work, and that is the motto behind Sunrise Retreats. With a shared mission to create a landing pad for grief surrounded by nature, informed with tools and education, creativity, good food, healing touch, and compassionate people, this group of unique beings keeps all of the dreamers on task! We're thankful for our very first dream team made the retreat happen way back in 2017. We are deeply grateful for the onsite retreat team filled with past retreat participants who share their ears and hearts along with our board that makes sure we have the resources to offer Sunrise Retreats. And we cherish our brilliant Heart Hands team that cares for our participants with extra love.
The widow warriors behind the scenes, hand tying blankets, curating welcome bags, making phone calls, sending cards, reaching out to others, tending to their grief, quietly offering support, and spreading hope. This is a continuous circle of healing and growth while also reaching hearts and hands out to others.

I always say, "I was born a Vandal!" It was fun to grow up in Moscow, a vibrant university town and it was natural that I would attend college there. The highlight was finding my future husband--we were married for 45 years working together in the cattle feeding and ranching business and raising our son, Rob in Weiser. I worked in bookkeeping jobs for many years until attending TVCC, receiving my LPN certificate and switching careers to nursing and then becoming a pharmacy tech, while still serving as support personnel on the ranch
I've spent 30 years as a member of our local school board and was proud to serve as president of the Idaho School Boards Association. I've recently purchased a condo in Moscow, as a second home, just 3 blocks from where I grew up, and plan to attend lots of U of I events. Go Vandals!
Blessed to be able to attend the first Sunrise Retreat, I've been involved with this amazing group of women ever since, and especially enjoy offering my chocolate sheet cake as a thank you for them including me in their loving arns!

With 26 years of experience as an enrollment coordinator, coach, and facilitator for a personal & professional development company, I thoroughly enjoy sharing those skills with the Sunrise Retreats team.
Some of the other skill sets I bring to our community include a practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Hakomi Therapy, an Integrative Breathing Practitioner and group facilitator. I have been a white water rafter for over 40 years.
When my husband died in 2016 of Glioblastoma, I attended the hopsic grief support program. It was here that I found out about Sunrise Retreats. After attending the first retreat in McCall, I continued to connect, heal and grow alongside my fellow widows.

I earned a Master of Social Work from Boise State University in 2015 and obtained my clinical endorsement in 2018. I have years of experience working with individuals and families.
I am a trauma-informed EMDR Certified Therapist, with specialized training in several EMDR techniques that include FLASH, DeTur, R-Tep, G-Tep and EMDR for early attachment injuries. I use an eclectic, strengths-based, client-centered approach to treatment that allows me to meet you where you are in your process. I integrate Internal Family Systems Therapy theory and several evidence-based treatment techniques into our time together.
I believe that the most important part of therapy is the therapeutic relationship. You can expect a supportive, non-judgmental, authentic presence from me. My goal is to support your ability to do the inner and outer work to heal and become the best version of your whole self. I believe that it is truly a privilege to be able to walk with someone through their fears, challenges, and pain and help guide them towards their own goals of healing and restoration. For this reason, I see therapy as an opportunity to help people reduce suffering, increase their connection with themselves and others, and to experience more joy, purpose, self-led living, and peace.

As the founder of Sunrise Retreats, Marni merges her personal journey as a widow with her professional expertise as a clinical Health Educator to assist others in developing tools for restoring health and well-being during the grieving process. Beyond her role at Sunrise Retreats, she facilitates the journey of self-reconnection and the rebuilding of well-being amidst life's profoundly significant moments through her coaching business Coalesce Discovery. Marni is often found exploring the Idaho pine forests and the ocean with her two remarkable sons and their beloved four-legged friends, Shelby and Diesel. She dreams of one day dedicating her time to crafting soap, stained glass, and leatherwork in a romantically magical atelier nestled within her Canadian Rockies homeland.
Marie became an avid supporter of Sunrise Retreats after hearing Marni speak of her widow journey and her "Dream".
She then participated in the first retreat in 2017 which was not only inspirational and life changing but it sparked a keen interest and willingness to be part of this amazing group.

I am a 3rd generation native Idahoan and my roots run deep. My professional life was my children. I stayed home with them until they were in secondary school when I took a full-time administrative assistant job at a junior high school.
My daughter introduced me to Sunrise Retreats through her association with River Discovery, a co-sponsor of Sunrise Retreats. She basically said I needed to go on this retreat and wouldn’t accept my “I don’t want to” as a viable excuse. Sunrise Retreats was a catalyst for me to redefine myself, to venture outside of my safe, predictable world, and to move forward with my life. It is an honor, a privilege and a rewarding journey to be involved in a mission whose intention is grounded in helping women be their best selves after losing the love of their lives.
My hope is that I bring kindness, compassion, empathy, a sympathetic history of being a caregiver, and a welcoming bench for other widows to sit and share their stories – free of judgment or expectation. I believe in Sunrise Retreats because I know firsthand that their mission is noble, worthy and meaningful.

I’ve lived in Boise for over 15 years and am enjoying raising my two children (ages 12 & 14) in Idaho. I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, and loved being by the ocean. When I was in college, I worked at Glacier National Park and fell in love with the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. I then moved to Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland where I reconnected with my husband, an old family friend who I’d last seen when I was 8 years old. We decided to move to New Meadows and put down roots in Idaho.
I studied biology at several universities in the Southeast. My first “real” job was treating cancer patients as a radiation therapist, and then I transitioned into clinical research working for several pharmaceutical companies over the past 20 years in various therapeutic areas such as oncology, ophthalmology, cardiovascular, respiratory, central nervous system, and women’s health.
I knew I wanted to be a part of Sunrise Retreats as soon as I met Marni paddleboarding at a River Discovery event a few months after my husband had passed away. Knowing that Marni had experienced the same type of loss and seeing her positive energy, contagious smile, and radiating light, gave me the first glimmer of hope after the loss of Gavin. I learned so much from Sunrise Retreats and Marni’s classes that first year of widowhood so I wanted to be sure other widows could continue to benefit from these opportunities and help in any capacity to keep the SR flame burning.
I love going to concerts, hiking, road tripping with my kids, exploring as many National Parks as possible, camping, napping in my hammock, taking barre classes, and the smell of tomato plants.

After losing my husband of 50 yrs to cancer I was totally lost and broken. I saw a flier for Sunrise Retreats at my grief group, and something told me I needed to go. I attended the very first retreat and it changed my life, and since i have volunteered at the past two retreats because I want to give back. I want to support and help in any way I can. If I can give hope to just one widow that is feeling the pain I have felt, that is my purpose in volunteering.
