Although the first Sunrise Retreat was in July 2017, it had been on the dream board of our founder, Marni, for many years. The vision to create a space of nourishment and hope for other widows started in her grief journey following the death of her husband in 2013.
When she shared her dream with a small group of other women, they answered YES and the dream became reality. They became the "Dream Team." After reaching out to River Discovery, a local non profit in Boise serving cancer survivors, we joyfully partnered to offer the retreat for widows of cancer in McCall, Idaho.
Now, in 2019, we begin the next step by establishing our own non profit, Sunrise Retreats, Inc. By taking this step, we will now be able to expand our reach to ALL widows and others experiencing loss.
Today, we have many of the past retreat participants volunteering to continue the circle of outreach. Our "Trail Blazers" bring their passion to the community as they reach out in hope.
Find a bit of inspiration from when Marni first shared her story to begin Sunrise Retreats.
It takes many hands to make light work and that is the motto behind Sunrise Retreats. With a common mission to create a landing pad for grief surrounded by nature, creativity, good food, healing touch and compassionate people, this group of amazing beings keep all of the dreamers on task!
From our very first dream team who made the retreat happen to our widow warriors who lead the way for others and our board which give us the ability to continue dreaming and offering these resources to our community, we love working together to create healing magic!
The widow warriors behind the scenes, making the meals, reaching out to others, growing in grief, laughing around the camp fire, quietly offering tender support and spreading hope. Many of these women were at the first retreat and have stayed with us. Now, they complete the circle of widow retreats supported by other widows.
We are humbled and grateful for these incredible people. Look for future high lights on these magic makers.

As a child raised by a magnificent mother who lost her husband early in her life it is my objective to be a valuable resource to those and share my experience as a child who lost a parent.
I love spending time with my husband and three children running, hiking, and skiing as well as coaching people to run endurance events. I worked as the Director of Independent Living for a local non-profit serving people with disabilities for 16 years. In that capacity, I had the opportunity to engage with the community as a whole, cementing valuable relationships and gaining knowledge of support services available in the Treasure Valley. I am dedicated to serving my community and love playing an active role in making Idaho a better place to live for everyone.

As the Marketing Manager at Page One Power, Jan is the wrangler of tasks, keeper of peace, and organizer extraordinaire. Social media master and knick-knack emporium curator. Knows good marketing comes from collaboration, a warm office, and a few cups of strong coffee. Jan is also the Managing Editor of PAGES magazine, a quarterly SEO print magazine for digital marketers. From the sage advice of her mother to always give back or her husband's claim, "You don't want my talent; you need to speak to my wife," Jan has traveled from the southeast to the northwest and has embraced a wide vast of volunteer opportunities. She welcomes each challenge whole-heartedly—typically with a camera poised and ready. Now, after a decade in Boise, Jan has found herself "home" and with a new identity. As a widow, Jan brings a unique perspective as a Sunrise Retreat board member. Not forgetting the sage advice, she's forever driven to give back and share the talents her late husband was so eager for her to share. Jan craves international travel, plant-based meals and parenting two twenty-something children.
After 26 years, I retired from a personal and professional development company to take care of my husband who passed away in 2016. I have 2 sons and 4 grandsons. After attending the very first Sunrise Retreat in 2017, I knew I wanted to be apart of this organization. Not only do I enjoy being on the board, I love being able to use my professional skills in the coordination of our retreat schedule...and help other women enjoy kayaking!
